The main town of the Ilha de Madeira is Funchal. Being the largest of a small group of islands located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean that occupy a land area of 797 square kilometers, it is 56 kms. long and 19 kms. wide. Despite its relatively small size, it would take a day to drive around the island, especially because of its volcanic peaks that soar up to 1.862 meters.
People visiting the island will be easily caught up by the lush semi-tropical vegetation that invades the coastline, as well as with the impressive volcanic peaks.
Despite the fact that earlier sailors already knew the island, it was in the early 15th century that the original settlement of people on the island took place. These first settlers were led by João Gonçalves, a famous Portuguese explorer.
