Predator Sales Tactics at Airport Car Rental Counters

Know your rights. Avoid pressure. Save money.

1. The Problem: Aggressive Upselling at Rental Counters

When customers arrive at the car rental counter in Portugal, they are often tired from the flight and eager to start their holiday. Rental company agents are trained to use this vulnerable moment to push unnecessary insurance products, upgrades, and extras at inflated prices.

This is a widespread industry practice that affects customers across virtually all major rental companies. Understanding these tactics helps you arrive prepared and confident.

2. Are You Obligated to Purchase Additional Insurance?

IMPORTANT ANSWER: NO!

  • You are NOT required to purchase any additional insurance at the counter.
  • Our rates already include Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Theft Protection (TP).
  • If you booked with Purple Umbrella, you have ZERO excess - complete protection.

However, rental agents may still strongly attempt to sell additional options. The final decision is always yours. We advise declining pressure-based upsells.

3. Common Pressure Tactics Exposed

3.1 The Special Offer Tactic

What they say: "We have a special offer today only - upgrade to full protection for just EUR15/day!"

Reality: This same special is usually offered every day to almost every customer. At EUR15/day, a 30-day rental adds EUR450 unnecessarily.

3.2 The Fear Tactic

What they say: "Your insurance does not cover tires, windshield, or undercarriage. You will be fully liable!"

Reality: Always check your voucher first. Your coverage terms are clearly stated there. If you have Purple Umbrella, excess is zero.

3.3 The Social Proof Tactic

What they say: "Most customers take our premium protection package. It is the smart choice."

Reality: Informed customers usually decline. Many who accept these upsells end up overpaying by hundreds of euros.

3.4 The Guilt/Risk Tactic

What they say: "Sign here to decline protection - at your own risk. Are you sure?"

Reality: This is a standard form. Sign it confidently. You already have valid coverage through your booking.

3.5 The Upgrade Push

What they say: "Your car category is not available, but we can upgrade you for just EUR10 more per day!"

Reality: If your booked category is genuinely unavailable, you are entitled to a free upgrade. Never pay for an upgrade they must provide.

4. Your Response Script

Use these confident, polite responses at the counter:

Agent: "Would you like our premium protection?"

You: "No thank you, I am fully covered through my booking."

Agent: "But what if something happens..."

You: "I am comfortable with my existing coverage, thank you."

Agent: "You should really consider..."

You: "I appreciate the offer, but my answer is no. Let's proceed with the pickup."

You: "Let me call my broker to confirm my coverage."

5. The Child Seat Trap

One of the most expensive counter traps involves baby seats, child seats, and booster seats.

  • Rental company charge: EUR10-15 per day
  • For a 30-day rental: EUR300-450 for one seat
  • Buy a new seat locally: around EUR30-50
  • Bring your own from home: EUR0

Advice to Customers

For rentals longer than 5 days, it is often cheaper to buy a child seat locally than to rent one from the car company.

6. Read Before You Sign!

If you choose to purchase extras at the counter to reduce your excess/deductible, please remember:

  • Read every document thoroughly before signing
  • Once signed, you are bound by those terms
  • The rental company has full authority to charge accordingly
  • There is no cooling-off period once signed
  • Ask for a copy of everything you sign

7. Your Rights as a Customer

  • You can decline all extras - no exceptions
  • You are not required to explain your decision
  • Your existing booking coverage remains valid
  • Pressure tactics do not change your contract terms
  • You have the right to take time to read documents
  • You may request to speak with a manager if pressured
