Rates include public liability and property damage, fire and theft of the car (luggage is not included or any items inside the vehicle). Theft of your personal property left in a hire vehicle is not covered by your vehicle insurance.

The "excess" is the amount from which the fully comprehensive insurance take charge of the expenses for caused damage. CDW never covers damage to tires, rims, upholstery, locks, the vehicle’s underside and loss / damage to car keys and remote lock or damage through inadequate refueling.

All insurance / contract loses its validity in case of negligence, misuse, reckless driving, or driving under the effects of alcohol and/or narcotics.

Claims can be sent in a maximum period of 30 days after the rental has taken place.

Mandatory Deposit (Excess Deductible)

Super CDW (Full Insurance Coverage)

If you opted for CDW and TP, or if your rate includes CDW and TP, you may also wish to purchase an additional protection, Super CDW (SCDW), to reduce the already limited liability in case of damage to, or loss of the Sixt / JAP vehicle, provided the vehicle is used in accordance with the terms and conditions of the rental agreement.

Super CDW (SCDW) is not available when the main driver is less than 23 years old.

Super CDW (SCDW) can only be purchased at time of pick-up. The violation of the agreement terms and conditions or unreported accidents may void this protection.

If client buys this insurance (available on arrival only), then they will not block the big amounts we explain above.

As with any insurance policy, there are exclusions which affect the cover provided.

Third Party Liability

50 million Euros basic insurance includes unlimited coverage on bodily injury to persons other than the driver and on property damage to anything other than the Sixt / JAP vehicle.

Security Deposit & Payment Policy

Acceptable methods of payment are all major credit cards (MasterCard, Visa, American Express, Diners Club, Visa Electron, Discover cars are not acepted).

Debit cards allowed only for payment (credit card will always also be required as guarantee). There will be no refunds if clients only have debit cards on arrival and cannot get the car because of this as a major cerdit card is required for the security deposit.

Cash allowed only for payment (a credit card will always also be required as guarantee).

No cash for security is allowed.

At the time of rental an authorization is obtained on your credit card. There must be sufficient credit on your card to cover all charges. Two credit cards needed for rentals of Special Cars (Premium and Luxury groups L2, M2). One of them must be GOLD.

We do hold a deposit on the credit card until the vehicle is returned.  We charge a 50 Euros NO show if you dont show up and dont tell us till Midnight of the arrival day

Drivers Policy

The person named on the reservation booking must be the main driver, present at time of rental and payer of any rental charges. Additional drivers are possible with a fee of € 5.00 with a maximum charge of € 50.00 per rental.

Minimum age is 25 years (18-24 years with Young Driver Supplement) and always at least 1 year in possession of a national driving license, present valid passport / identity card. However, it is possible to rent all vehicle groups from 18  to 24 years on payment of a young driver surcharge of  8.50 euros per day up to € 85.00 per rental. Maximum age 70 years.

Please note that the young driver surcharge is not available for the excepted vehicle groups: G, G1, G2, I, J, J1, J2, L, L2, M2.

For all Non-European Union renters, an International Driving Permit (IDP) is highly recommended.

Optional Extras

Sixt / JAP offers a chauffeur-drive service for those customers not wishing or able to drive. This service cannot be booked via the Internet. For further information, please contact your reservation center.

Road Side assistance does not cover flat tires, loss of keys, wrong fuel of if cars breaksdown because of client negligence

Minimum Rental

Minimum rental: 1 day.
Maximum rental: 30 days.

Fuel Policy

Sixt / JAP rates do not include fuel. All vehicles are supplied with a full tank and should be returned with the same amount or a local refueling charge will apply in addition to the cost of the fuel.

Please be aware that we are unable to give a refund for unused fuel.

Fuel Purchase Option (FPO): For convenience, you may purchase a tank of fuel from Sixt / JAP at the time of rental at a price that is competitive with local fuel stations; this method eliminates the need for you to refill the tank before returning.


Sixt / JAP offers an electronic toll device for an additional charge in the amount of € 4.00 (activation fee) + € 1.85 per day with maximum of € 18.50 per rental.

Sixt / JAP then pays the toll fees on your behalf and afterwards deducts the amount from your credit card accordingly.

Otherwise it is your responsibility to pay the toll fees. The fees to be paid are only available for 48 hours after passing the toll booth and can be settled at a post office (CTT) up to 5 days after travelling.

Failure to pay the toll fees implies penalties and other administrative costs as prescribed by the law. Please don't confuse ROAD TAXES witH ETOLLS as they are two diferent things

Delivery / Collections Policy

If booking a car for collection at an airport location please ensure that you provide a flight number for your arrival. If you do not provide a flight number and you are late then it is possible your booking may be cancelled.

It is obligatory to present the voucher to pick up the car.

No refund for early return once the rental period started.

Rental Extension: In case of extension (see Web), please, take notice that you are required to go a Sixt / JAP office before the end of the rental period to sign the new contract. On the contrary, all insurances (CDW, TP, Windows/Tires, etc.) lose their validity and, occasionally, there’s an extra charge per day (aprox. € 20.00), for late extension.

Grace Period: An extra 60 minutes term (based on the pick-up hour) is allowed for the vehicle return. Note that this is already calculated on prices online. Otherwise an extra day will be charged.

Roadside Assistance

Roadside assistance is provided 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

One-Way Rentals Policy

A one-way rental is a rental which starts at one location and terminates at another. Availability is subject to location restrictions and vehicle type. A fee may apply for this service and will be advised at time of reservation.

For any driving restrictions within or outside Portugal please refer to “Driving Restrictions”.

Out of Hours Fees

Out of hours service is allowed. An additional charge will be applied to any vehicles collected after office hours. This is the price for pick-up. The same price is also for drop-off if customer wants us to be there after / before opening / closing hours. After hour fee is the same for all locations. This is added online if clients enter after hours when do the booking. This note is for clients that changes times on arrival / departure. Out of hours pick-ups & drop-offs are available as follows:

Oporto and Lisbon Airport: Monday - Sunday:

Out of hour drop-offs are only available at the airports and can only be requested at time of reservation. Out of hours pick-ups & drop-offs are not available at any other location. For additional information please contact the location. Specific conditions may apply.

Cross Border Policy

International one-ways are not allowed. Vehicles can be driven in Spain. The driver will be held fully responsible in case of accidents and will bear all consequences, including the cost of repatriation of the damaged vehicle if he decides cross the border to France or other countries.


A cleaning charge may be applied, at the end of the rental for vehicles that are not returned in acceptable clean conditions, costing € 10.00 with a maximum of € 120.00.

Other Terms and Conditions

Except for economic and compact cars, the reservations are subject to confirmation from Sixt / JAP. In a minimum space of time, the car’s availability is checked for the date / office you indicated.

Loss of keys is full responsibility of the client.

In case of accident: where the driver is found at fault, the insurance companies decline any or all responsibility for that driver of all damages caused to the hired vehicle or to third parties whenever it is detected that the driver was driving under the influence of alcohol, narcotics, drugs, toxic products or by insanity of the driver or by a driver not in the contract.

Also if the client uses the car in sportive competitions, races, rallies, challenges, contests, bets, etc. Even if the car’s driver is not under the influence of any of the above items but by any means whatsoever destroys our car by his own fault, we shall not refund any amount for the time left to complete the rental. We will only give another car against a large deposit that may cover eventual damages that may be caused to the new car.

Pricing Policy

Please note that prices published on this website are subject to amendment at any time. Prices of extra fees may also be changed at any time without notice.

Prices are fixed in Euros at the day of pick-up and if paid by US credit card (billed in US$) the final price in USD may slightly deviate due to fluctuations in exchange rate at the time of billing submitted to credit card company. We decline responsibility for value variations in the US Dollar against any currencies.

Credit Card Security Deposit

When you rent a car in Portugal a pre-authorization is required for the excess / deductible / franquia amount of the vehicle (See excess / deductible / franquia values). To avoid any responsability on this excess / deductible / franquia, we recomend that you buy the Super CDW.

If a pre-authorization is not left, then the purchase of additional insurances are mandatory to reduce the excess / deductible / franquia to a minimum. If the excess / deductible / franquia is not reduced to zero, a pre-authorization is required for the reduced excess amount.

Even with Super CDW and even on small rentals please make sure your credit card has at least € 500.00 credit line as they will block this amount to cover minimum deductible / fuel and in case you need to extend the rental.

Please note that some rental companies do not accept American Express.


We do not charge for cancellations if client cancels at least 7 days before arrival date on voucher. Just advise us for the new dates and we will calculate the new value. We do not give credits or refunds if client returns the car (early drop-offs) before the time of departure on the voucher after the rental is started. In case of overbooking by the car company our maximum lialibity is the value of our voucher and you must call us as we are always able to get the car at another company. All refunds will be done thru Paypal only.

How can you offer cars at such discounted prices?

For two reasons. First, we have teamed up with the biggest car rental in Portugal who have negotiated these favorable rates. Second, we use the internet to do all the transactions which cuts our cost considerably.

Who created Portugal-auto-rentals.com ?

Driving speed limits

Towns: 31mph (50kmh), outside built-up areas: 56/62mph (90/100kmh), motorways: 74mph (120kmh)

Drinking and driving

Blood alcohol limit is 50mg. at official tram stops, overtaking is forbidden until passengers have finished entering or leaving the tram.

Other prohibitions

Carrying gas cans in cars is forbidden. Do not use the horn except to warn of danger. Park on the right. Give way to the right. Tolls and fine are clients responsabilities

Travel to other countries

Travel to Greece, Morocco or any country involved in war is prohibited. Travel to any country outside western Europe must be requested in advance. Travel to Spain requires a Special Insurance. Please call us for details.

Advise From Us

On arrivals do note that car companies attendants are very aggressive selling extras insurances and other extras and also upgrades to bigger cars but please note that this will duplicate the amount of rental so use your own good judgment please.

An International Driver’s License (IDL) is required if the renter’s national driver’s license is not in Roman alphabet (i.e. Arabic, Greek, Russian or Chinese). International driver's license must be accompanied by the original domestic license of the driver. UK license holders must present both the photocard and its paper counterpart at the time of rental.

If you do not present any of the documents listed above, the documentation is not valid or you do not have enough funds on your credit card, the car rental agent may refuse to release the vehicle and no funds will be reimbursed to you. Make sure you have a large enough limit to cover the excess. Car companies will only accept original documentation. Copies of documents are not accepted.

Please note that if you collect or return your vehicle outside the pick-up / drop-off time and date booked, additional charges may be applicable. Please also note that the vehicle may not be available if you arrive late to the rental desk. If the vehicle is not released due to a late arrival no funds will be reimbursed. In the event of a delay please contact the rental provider directly.

Quotes are valid for 24 hours only - also note that Automatic cars, Vans and Cabriolets should be requested and booked well in advance as they are sold out months in advance. To confirm your quote you must book it on website or reply to this email with name, address, phone and flight arrival information please.

Early returns are no longer credited by car rental companies.

If you want to change your booking, you'll be subject to the new rates as they change all the time.
