AutoUnion Terms and Conditions - Ask Carlos!
AutoUnion is an international car rental network operating its own stations across Greece, Spain, Italy and Croatia — from big airport hubs like Athens, Barcelona, Rome Fiumicino and Split to island offices, ports and hotel delivery points.
The terms below summarise what is included in the rate we quote and what is payable at the rental desk. Full contractual terms are signed at the counter on collection and prevail over this summary.
How payment works
AutoUnion bookings use a partial-prepayment model: online you pay only our booking fee. The full rental price (NET rate) and any extras are paid directly to AutoUnion at the desk when you collect the vehicle.
The amount payable at the desk is shown on your voucher.
Included in the quoted price
- Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) with deductible — see the table below
- Theft Protection (TP), included in CDW, with deductible
- Third-party liability insurance per local legislation
- Unlimited mileage
- All local taxes and airport fees
- 24-hour roadside assistance
Not included / payable at the counter
- Fuel — return the car with the same fuel level you collected it with
- Young / senior driver fees where the driver is outside the standard age band
- Optional extras (additional driver, baby/child/booster seats, GPS, snow chains)
- One-way fees, out-of-hours fees and hotel/port delivery fees, where applicable
- Cross-border fees (prior authorisation always required)
- Tolls, parking and traffic fines, plus any administrative handling fees
Excess, deposit and key conditions by country
Ranges shown; the exact CDW excess and deposit for your car group are displayed on the car card when you book and on your voucher. The deposit is pre-authorised on the lead driver's physical credit card at pickup and released after the rental if no damage or theft occurred.

No Excess option
Our AutoUnion No Excess rate includes the supplier's Full Damage Waiver (FDW), which removes the CDW damage excess.
Even with FDW, damage to wheels, the underside and glass, plus the CDW exception list (keys, interior, fuel errors, negligence…), stays chargeable — AutoUnion sells a separate WUG (Wheels, Underside, Glass) cover at the desk.
A credit-card deposit is still pre-authorised at pickup even on No Excess rates.
Documents required at pickup
- Valid driving licence held for at least 1 year (physical licence — digital licences are not accepted)
- International Driving Permit when the licence is not in the Roman alphabet (Italy: required whenever the licence is not in English)
- Passport or national ID matching the licence
- Physical credit card in the lead driver's name with sufficient limit for the deposit
Payment at the desk
- Visa, MasterCard and Diners credit cards are accepted in all countries
- American Express is accepted in Greece, Spain and Italy, but NOT in Croatia
- Debit cards, prepaid/virtual cards, Maestro and cash are NOT accepted for the deposit
- Italy: the card must be embossed, PIN-enabled and issued in the driver's country of residence; luxury groups require two credit cards from different issuers
Pickup & out-of-hours service
- At most airports AutoUnion runs a free shuttle to its office — call the pickup phone number on your voucher when you land
- Vehicles are held for up to 2 hours after the agreed pickup time; contact the station if you will arrive later
- Out-of-hours pickup/drop-off is available at selected stations for a fee (free key-boxes at several Italian airports and Heraklion)
- Hotel, port and rail-station delivery is available in many areas for a delivery fee
Cross-border & ferry travel
- Greece: vehicles may NOT leave Greece; ferry travel between Greek islands only after coordination with the station, with ferry insurance (approx. €74 per rental)
- Spain: allowed on request to Portugal, Gibraltar, Andorra and France — €20/day, max €250 per rental
- Italy: allowed to most EU countries — €100–€150 per rental depending on country and car group; ferry travel only after coordination with AutoUnion Italy
- Croatia: allowed within Europe except Türkiye — €80–€200 per rental depending on destination; written authorisation required
Cancellation
You can cancel free of charge up to 24 hours before the pickup time — the booking fee paid online is refunded in full. For later cancellations or no-shows the booking fee is not refundable. To cancel, reply to your booking confirmation email or contact us through the contact page.
